A Letter from the Principal

Dear Families,

Welcome to the 23-24 school year! As the Principal of The Edith K. Bergtraum School PS 165Q, I want to take this opportunity to welcome and invite you and your child to enter fully into the life of our school. While this year is coupled with both excitement and nervousness, I can assure you Team 165 will follow all the health and safety regulations set forth by the DOH and DOE. While safety is first, we continue to have a laser sharp focus on teaching and learning. We also continue to align our work with The Chancellor’s priorities, District 25’s goals , and our school’s mission, vision, and values.

With Covid 19 there have been some challenges, however as a school we continue to re-imagine and revise our action plans to get things done for our students. I am delighted to share that all grades we will continue to have enrichment activities. More information about our enrichment opportunities are forthcoming. We continue to have a robust arts component including dance, visual arts, music, and theater. Students will have the opportunities to participate fully in at least one of the Arts this academic year. Students also have physical education with two dynamic PE instructors.

While academics are important, we also know Social Emotional Learning (SEL) truly matters. Daily, children will work on The five SEL competencies (self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, social awareness, and relationship skills).

Parents, while there are some changes and challenges due to Covid 19 , there will be many opportunities for parent and family participation. Together with the Parent Coordinator, our Parent Teachers Association Organization (PTA), and School Leadership Team (SLT) we will make sure that we develop different opportunities and activities that will include you and our community. We strongly believe that your involvement and contributions will play a positive role that will enrich your child’s school experience.

Our Theme continues to be- From Many We Are One, One Mission, One Vision, 165. Working together with a sense of oneness- we can accomplish wonderful things for our children.

As a reminder please sign up for Parentsquare , as this is the primary communication tool I use for parents. Also please reach out to your child’s teacher about his/her primary communication tool. Most teachers will use class-dojo and email for communication.

Please follow us on Twitter @PrincipalNealy and @PS165Queens for regular updates.

Educationally Yours,

Tiffany L. Davis-Nealy, Principal
